The Open Seven is e21designs' published commitment to seven specific ways the firm gives back. Each commitment uses our own word, Open, already named in the navigation: Open Studio, Open Source, Open Seats, The Foundry, Free Reads, the Reading Room, and Open Policy. Each has an operational page, an auditable cadence and a public outcome. Together they are how a fourteen-year-old Chennai firm pays the category back for the privilege of working in it.
The covenant is not virtue signalling. It is a commercial decision. The partners we want, ₹50 crore-plus Indian B2B operators with multi-decade horizons, measure agencies on the same axis they measure their own companies: what does this firm leave behind? Firms that answer that question with operational specifics attract the partners who matter.
The seven commitments below are not a marketing exercise. They are the firm's operating posture, named and published so prospective partners can audit them before a first call, and so existing partners can hold us to them inside the engagement letter. We have used our own word, Open, because the navigation already carries it, and because every commitment does behave the same way in practice: a door the firm refuses to close.
This essay walks the seven, in operational detail. None of them are aspirational. All of them are running today.
The covenant · seven commitments · written into how the firm operates.
Each line below has a live page on this site, a published cadence, and an outcome you can audit. Together they form what the engagement letter calls The Open Seven.
- Open Studio · the civic half. Six Indian non-profits currently receive full pro-bono AEO engagements. Citation Score diagnostic, schema deployment, llms.txt, and ninety days of off-site evidence work. 10% of every partnership's revenue funds this. Reported quarterly.
- Open Source · the methodology, in full. The Cited Brand System™, every layer, every principle, every indicator, is published openly at /the-method. The trademark protects the name; the publication protects the discipline.
- Open Seats · apprentices paid at senior rates. Six seats a year for apprentices in AI development, video, copywriting, semantic engineering and strategy, every apprentice paid at senior compensation, mentored by Dr. Avinaash personally.
- The Foundry · a twelve-month student residency. Three students each year work inside the firm on live partner engagements, with a stipend, not an internship fee. Designed to produce operators, not interns.
- Free Reads · no-cost Citation Score for any qualifying firm. Five free AI Visibility Reads each month, reviewed personally by Dr. Avinaash, returned in five working days. No newsletter. No CRM. No follow-up sequence.
- The Reading Room · open-access briefings. Every published essay on this site, including the 247-brand audit, is open access, republishable with attribution. The 247-brand dataset is open data under Creative Commons.
- Open Policy · academic and civic time. 10% of senior partner time committed to Indian academic institutions and government bodies working on AI literacy, AI search ethics and category standards. Honoraria donated back to the institutions.
Why this is a commercial decision, not a charitable one.
The first time we wrote the covenant into an engagement letter, for a ₹140 Cr Indian D2C brand in late 2023, the founder of that firm sent a short note back that I have kept on a wall in our Chennai office. It read, in full: "You will hear from me before you hear from any other agency we evaluate this year. Send the contract." She did not negotiate the fee. She did not ask for a discount. She read the civic clause and signed within forty-eight hours.
That moment changed how I thought about positioning. I had assumed civic commitments were a brand-affinity layer, nice to have, not commercially load-bearing. I was wrong. For the partner base we want. Indian operators above ₹50 Cr who have multi-decade horizons, family-business board representation, and a real sense of generational responsibility, the civic clause is the strongest commercial signal we can send. It tells them, in writing, that the firm operates on a time-horizon longer than the engagement. It says: we are still going to be here in twelve years. We are building the way you are building.
In the last twenty-eight months, every partner we have signed has cited The Open Seven as a reason, sometimes the first reason, in their post-decision debrief. The covenant did not cost us revenue. It selected for the partners who were paying the most.
What the civic work actually looks like.
Three categories, in order of how much of the 10% goes to each.
One · Pro-bono AEO for Indian non-profits. Six organisations currently in the rotation: an Indian education non-profit running rural digital literacy at scale, a Chennai-based AI ethics research collective, a women-in-engineering mentorship body, a Tamil Nadu literacy programme, an Indian environmental research foundation, and a public health charity in Bangalore working on diagnostic access. Each receives the full Citation Score™ diagnostic, schema deployment, llms.txt setup, and 90 days of off-site evidence work, at no cost. The selection criteria are written down: the non-profit must operate transparently, publish its financials, and serve a public good that the AI engines should be helping to surface.
Two · Open methodology publication. The Cited Brand System™, the four named principles, the twelve indicators of the Citation Score, the 247-brand audit data, the four case briefings (including the one that plateaued), all published at full operating depth on this site. Indian agencies replicating the methodology under attribution are explicitly welcome. The trademark exists to keep the name clean. The publication exists so the discipline gets better faster than any single firm could carry it.
Three · Government, academic and policy contribution. Dr. Avinaash sits on an advisory rotation with two Indian academic institutions working on AI search ethics, has presented to two state-government bodies on AI literacy in B2B procurement, and contributes to the public record on Indian AI policy through occasional op-eds in named publications. The time is logged. The honoraria, where they exist, are donated back to the academic institutions.
The governance · why the firm operates this way.
The structural decision underneath the covenant is the one that took the longest to make. e21designs is partner-funded, not VC-funded. Capacity is capped at ten partnerships per year, firm-wide. Founder reviews every engagement personally. The firm has never raised external capital and has no plans to.
Each of those choices independently looks like the kind of restraint that limits growth. Combined, they are a governance posture that limits the wrong kind of growth, the kind that produces an agency optimised for next quarter's billings rather than partners optimised for the next decade's compounding. We are not building like an agency optimised for an exit. We are building like a firm that intends to be working in this category in 2040.
This is not a romantic claim. It is a pragmatic one. The partners we want. Indian B2B firms scaling globally, family-business CEOs taking the third-generation transition, founders who measure success in decades, recognise this posture from inside their own boardrooms. They sign because the firm operates on their time-horizon, not on a venture-fund clock.
What this means if you are evaluating us.
Three things to read about the firm before the first conversation, in the order I would read them if I were sitting in your seat:
- The Cited Brand System™, the published methodology. If the discipline does not survive that read, the firm does not deserve the second meeting.
- The B2B SaaS case briefing, the one that plateaued. If the firm cannot publish failures cleanly, none of the wins are credible.
- The Open Studio, the operational home of the civic work. If the civic posture is decorative, this page would be empty. It is not.
Read those three. Then if you operate a B2B firm above ₹50 crore in revenue and you would like a personal read of how AI engines see your category, write to avinaash@e21designs.com. The conversation begins with a free Citation Score and ends, usually within five working days, with a clear written recommendation on whether engagement is warranted. If the answer is no, we say so in writing.
That is the covenant. That is the firm. That is why the partners stay.
