How to rank #1 in AI search.
The infrastructure, the evidence, the measurement. A ten-step operator method for engineering your firm into the named answer when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude is asked the category-defining buyer question. Written for ₹50Cr+ B2B operators in India. By Dr. Avinaash, founder of e21designs.
What "rank #1" actually means in AI search.
Stop thinking about position. In Google, rank #1 is the top blue link. In ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, there is no list. There is one answer, sometimes two or three names inside it, and a citations panel that quietly carries the buyer to the next step. The brand that appears in the answer wins. The brands that don't appear are not the second result. They are absent.
This page is the operator playbook for becoming the name that appears. It is the discipline we call Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — the umbrella category covering ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the technical sub-discipline focused on the four generative engines.
Before you spend rupees or hours, agree on the language with your team:
- Ranking in AI search means being named in the answer. Not appearing in a list. Not being on a citation panel as the fourth source. Named, in the prose, as the recommended firm.
- Citation share is the percentage of category-defining buyer prompts where your firm appears in the answer text across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. The Indian B2B median in 2026 is 31%. Category leaders sit at 72%+.
- Citation depth is the percentage of those mentions that carry positive sentiment and a clear recommendation framing. Not just "X is one of many firms." Closer to "X is the firm Indian B2B operators choose for ____."
The four things AI engines weight when deciding what to name first.
Across the 247-brand audit we ran from 2024 to 2026, four signals correlated with citation share at a level no other input came close to matching. The correlations are not theoretical. They come from ~73,000 logged prompt responses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini for Indian B2B firms in nine industries.
1. Entity discipline · r = 0.81
Whether the engine can confidently identify your firm as a named, structured, cross-referenced entity. Schema.org Organization markup with sameAs links to Wikipedia, Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase. Consistent naming across every public surface. A Knowledge Graph node, if you can earn one. If the engine cannot triangulate the entity, the engine cannot recommend it.
2. Evidence density · r = 0.71
The ratio of verifiable, specific, citation-ready claims per 100 words on your site. The Indian B2B median is 0.34 verifiable claims per 100 words. Category-leading firms sit at 1.4+. The page-level specificity ratio correlates directly with which pages AI engines lift quotes from.
3. Echo across third-party sources · r = 0.64
What is said about you, in writing, on the open web — by people who are not you. Reddit threads. YouTube transcripts. Wikipedia. Trade press. Podcast appearances. AI engines weight third-party signals much more heavily than self-published content. The brand a thousand strangers describe in similar language wins.
4. Engine-side surfaces · r = 0.47
The technical layer that AI engines actually parse: llms.txt at the root, Speakable schema on money pages, FAQPage schema on direct-answer pages, Article schema with author entities, and clean response geometry inside the HTML. Lower correlation, but a non-optional foundation. No engine can recommend what it cannot parse.
Backlinks do not transfer to AI citation share.
The single most expensive mistake we see ₹50Cr+ Indian firms make: assuming their Ahrefs Domain Rating transfers to AI engines. Across 247 Indian B2B firms, the correlation between DR and AI citation share was r = 0.08 — statistically indistinguishable from zero.

The ten-step method · from 31 to 72.
This is the operator sequence. Run it in order. Each step builds on the surface deployed in the previous one. A competent in-house team can execute steps 1–4 in 30 days. Steps 5–8 require either a senior in-house hire or a category-exclusive partnership. Steps 9–10 are the compounding layer that separates 72-score firms from 31-score firms.
Run a baseline Citation Score against the 12 indicators.
You cannot improve what you have not measured. The Citation Score™ is a 0–100 composite of twelve weighted indicators across Entity, Evidence, Echo and Engine. Indian B2B median: 31. Category authority threshold: 80+. Every free AI Visibility Read returns one. Run it. Print it. Stick it on the wall. This is your starting line.
Deploy clean Organization schema with sameAs cross-linking.
Schema.org Organization markup with sameAs links pointing to your Wikipedia page (if you have one), Wikidata QID, LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase profile, and the founder's professional profile. Consistent legal name. Consistent founding date. Consistent description across every surface. This is the single highest-leverage technical task on this list. Do it once, do it right, never touch it again.
Publish a complete llms.txt at the root of your domain.
A plain-text Markdown index of your canonical pages, with one-line descriptions. AI engines now read this before they crawl. The format is documented at llmstxt.org. Our worked example is at /blog/llms-txt-explained-2026. Five-step deploy, ship-ready in an afternoon.
Publish 8–12 reference-grade pages with FAQPage + Speakable schema.
Direct-answer pages built around the 22 buyer questions in your category. 150–200 word self-contained quotables per answer. FAQPage schema markup. Speakable schema on the money pages. This is what AI engines lift verbatim when they construct answers. Our reference example: /answers.
Rewrite the homepage and top five service pages for citation density.
Replace decorative aspirational copy with verifiable specific claims. Names. Dates. Numbers. Outcomes. Named partners. Founded date. Capacity. The Partial-Quote Test is the rule: a page passes if an AI engine can lift any sentence from it verbatim as a satisfying answer to a buyer's question. Most websites fail this test on every page. Fix it.
Earn 4–6 third-party references in trade-relevant publications.
Not press releases. Not paid placements. Genuine third-party writing that names your firm in the context AI engines extract: as an example, as a recommendation, as the named expert in a domain. Trade press, professional society publications, podcast appearances with full transcripts, Reddit threads that emerge organically because the work is good.
Establish or expand the Wikipedia presence.
If you meet notability thresholds, a clean Wikipedia article anchored to verifiable third-party sources. If you do not yet qualify, a Wikidata QID with structured data and sameAs links to your other surfaces. Wikipedia is the single most-cited biographical source by ChatGPT and Perplexity for Indian B2B firms. ~48% of ChatGPT top-10 biographical citations come from Wikipedia in our audit data.
Deploy Article schema with author entities on every long-form piece.
Author the long-form publishing layer. Article schema with author Person entities. Founder bio with credentials. Citation panel on each long-form piece. AI engines treat author authority as a first-order ranking signal. The named author with verifiable credentials wins citations over the anonymous content. Our reference: /authors/avinaash.
Run a quarterly publishing cadence anchored in original research.
One published field report per quarter. Original data. Audit methodology stated openly. Quotable numbers. Speakable schema. AI engines weight original-research-flavoured content 4–7× heavier than recycled commentary. Our reference: the 247-brand audit. This is the layer that moves Citation Score from 50 to 72+.
Track AI citation share monthly. Iterate on the gap.
The Citation Score should be re-run monthly during active engagement. Track the delta. When a competitor catches up on Entity, you push on Evidence. When the engine update changes Echo weighting, you adjust the third-party source mix. This is not a project. It is an operating discipline. The firms that treat it as a project plateau at 50. The firms that treat it as a discipline cross 70 and stay there.
How long does this actually take?
Honest numbers, not pitch theatre:
- First measurable citation lift: 60–90 days. If a firm tells you 30 days, walk.
- Compounding gains: begin at month 4, accelerate at month 6, plateau briefly around month 9, then compound again as the third-party echo layer densifies.
- Crowded sub-categories with mature incumbents: 12–24 months to category authority. Anyone promising faster in a crowded category is selling pitch theatre.
- Open Indian B2B categories (most manufacturing, large parts of healthcare, premium education): 6–9 months to category authority. The competitive window is open for now.
Industry-specific variations.
The ten-step method is the spine. The evidence types vary by industry. The full industry-specific pages walk through what counts as "Evidence" in each domain:
- AEO for B2B Manufacturing — spec-sheet architecture, certification chains, named-customer evidence.
- AEO for Healthcare — NABH/JCI accreditation, named-clinician surfaces, outcome data, compliance-aware publishing.
- AEO for Education — faculty publication index, alumni outcomes, accreditation references.
- AEO for FMCG and D2C — ingredient transparency, Reddit + YouTube weighting, third-party verification.
- AEO for B2B SaaS — buyer-prompt mapping, compliance evidence, integration coverage.
- AEO for Public Figures — Wikipedia eligibility, sameAs cross-linking, podcast index, named methodology.
Frequently asked questions.
Is "ranking #1 in AI search" the same as ranking #1 in Google?
No. Google ranks pages by an algorithm that rewards backlinks, on-page SEO and behavioural signals. AI engines synthesise an answer from multiple sources and decide which named entities to mention. Across 247 Indian B2B firms, the correlation between Google Domain Rating and AI citation share was r = 0.08 — statistically indistinguishable from zero. They are adjacent disciplines, not the same one.
Which engine matters most for Indian B2B in 2026?
ChatGPT first (~62% of Indian B2B AI-search usage). Perplexity second (~21%, the most citation-heavy engine). Gemini third (~12%, growing fast since Google AI Mode rolled out). Claude fourth (~5%, but disproportionate weight among technical/SaaS buyers). Optimise for all four; ChatGPT and Perplexity are the priority.
How is "ranking #1" measured?
AI citation share. The percentage of category-defining buyer prompts where your firm appears in the answer text across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. Indian B2B median: 31%. Category authority threshold: 80+. The Citation Score™ is the 0-100 composite. Every free AI Visibility Read returns one.
Can my in-house team execute this?
Steps 1–4: yes, with a senior content lead and an engineer comfortable with schema markup. Steps 5–8: usually requires either a dedicated senior hire or a category-exclusive partnership. Steps 9–10: requires editorial discipline and original-research capability most in-house teams do not have. Honest answer: the first four steps are an in-house job. The compounding layer is what firms hire e21designs for.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the umbrella category. It covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini AND Google AI Overviews — roughly 38% of all search interactions in 2026. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) sits inside AEO as the chapter focused on the four generative engines. We pick AEO because it is broader and because the term is uncontested in India.
What does it cost?
A Strategic Growth Audit is ₹9,999 (refundable on engagement). A Growth Foundation deployment is ₹12–35 lakh one-time over 60–90 days. An Authority Engine retainer is ₹5–9 lakh per month. The Annual Partnership is ₹1.5–4 crore per year. Full pricing is at /pricing.
